An open letter to an ex-'friend'

23/01/24

I hope you read this. I’ll understand if not. You’ve muted me once before; what’s to stop you again? Still, I hope you read this. I’m not expecting for you to respond, I don’t even think you have the courage to. Still, your silence has been very telling. You’ve made it as clear as day what side you stand on, and your silence that you’ve given has been complicit to antisemitism. You do not care about Jewish voices as you might falsely believe - you’ve already silenced mine. You are no ally to the Jewish people and no longer a friend of mine.

You are not Israeli, you are not Palestinian, and you are certainly not Jewish. You have zero connection to the conflict in Israel/Palestine nor a connection to the atrocities that have happened since October 7th. None of this effects you! None of this has an impact on your daily life. So what gives you the right to think that you can gaslight those who are directly effected and preach to them what you (a non-Jew) thinks is and isn’t antisemitic?

I have seen the messages and comments. I have seen you try to school my Israeli-Jewish friend, I have seen you try to school other Israelis and other Jews, and you have even tried to school me. It’s not just extremely rude and offensive, but it’s mindlessly ignorant.

Just like how I do, you can support innocent Palestinian lives without being antisemitic and without using Israel as your scapegoat. I know other people who are solely Pro-Palestine, and respectfully, we can agree to disagree. They know how to have an open and civil conversation. Unlike you, they are not cowards.

You posted an image on your story of a sign that you were holding - FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA PALESTINE WILL BE FREE | Back the resistance. I questioned youdo you understand the meaning of this sign and what it stands for? What do you actually think it means and the message it sends?’ to which you responded, being against genocide doesn't equate to being antisemitic. I questioned you again,Genocide? Committed by who?’ ‘What ‘resistance’ are you backing? I briefly explained the negative and genocidal connotations of how ‘from the river to the sea’ calls for the annihilation of indigenous Jewish land, and questioned if you were for or against the ‘resistance’ led by Hamas? It was at this point that you pathetically muted me. You did not deny your support for Hamas, and you could not define the term genocide’.

When I called you out on your wrongs, you silenced me, a Jewish voice.

It is antisemitic of you to silence Jewish voices, especially when they tell you that certain words, phrases, and actions are antisemitic.

You claim that you’re not antisemitic, yet you are happy to march alongside people who are.

You claim that you’re not antisemitic, yet you are happy to proudly hold up signs which are.

You claim that you’re not antisemitic, yet you you choose to side with a resistancethat is.

You claim that you’re not antisemitic, yet you gaslight Jews with fictitious definitions of ‘antisemitism’.

You claim that you’re not antisemitic, yet you tokenize problematic Jewish voices’ that only suit your narrative.

You claim that you’re not antisemitic, yet you put antisemitic voices on a pedestal.

You claim that you’re not antisemitic, yet you silence innocent Jewish voices when they speak out against your misinformed and uneducated narrative.

You claim that you’re not antisemitic, yet you carelessly throw around terminology that is without understanding the true definitions and the harmful impact that they have towards the Jewish community.

When you carelessly use the word genocide, I challenged you to truly define it, which you failed to do so. When you carelessly used the word genocide, why could you not specify that it’s one of Hamas’ doing? If you are against genocide,’ then why can you not specifically condemn the call for an intifada nor the call for a continued Genocide Against Jews? If you are against genocide then why can you not condemn the targeted attacks against an ethnic minority, the Jews? If being against genocide does not equate to antisemitism, then why was the term ‘genocide’ first coined in 1944 to describe the atrocities committed by Nazi Occupation?

Inaccurately using terminology that is notoriously associated with Jewish trauma in a way that backhandedly harms Jewish people IS antisemitic.

It’s incredibly sad to see ‘friends’ fall into the trap of antisemitic propaganda, but it’s even sadder to see those refuse to climb out of it.

You proudly held a sign saying back the resistance - raping and mutilating women is not resistance. Murdering innocent Israelis, Palestinians, and Jews is not resistance. Supporting a revolt to eradicate an ethnic nation and its heritage is not resistance. None of this 'resistance'  will 'free Palestine'.

You claim that you areagainst genocide,’ yet you have chosen to be a part of something that is for it.

You might think that your activism is progressive, but your selectiveness and disregard for Black, Gay, Trans, and Women's lives that you advocate for just because they’re Israeli and/or Jewish is hypercritical. There is nothing ‘right’ about the words you’ve said and the actions you have made. You have chosen to be on the wrong side of history.

All the things that you have done and all the beliefs that you have chosen to take on solidify that you are an antisemite. When the extremists that you have ‘befriended’ turn their backs on you for being ‘queer’ or a ‘feminist’ or 'for pro-choice’ or 'for pro black lives’ do not come running to me for sympathy. When I have always been there to support marginalised groups who have been targeted, you not once showed your support to me when I was one of them. When myself, my family and our Jewish and Israeli friends collectively experienced trauma and direct antisemitism, you not once were there with your support.

Something so deeply rooted in hatred cannot be justified by your beliefs nor by your narrative. Something with a history so long and complex cannot be explained by your lack of basic knowledge. You have no grasp on reality nor the truths within it. You have no empathy for others nor for the labels and groups that you yourself identify with.

Still, I wish you well and all the best of luck living life supporting crimes against humanity.

We will no longer be ‘friends’; you’ll just be somebody that I used to know.
